Drinking Chocolate Recipe

To me, chocolate is one of the most magical, medicinal ingredients on the planet. The month of February you can always smell chocolate in the air. It is the celebratory gift of choice for Valentines Day and of course my birthday, which is the day after 😘

For this week's recipe, I’m going to share one of my favorite ways to enjoy chocolate that is so simple to make and takes only a few minutes.

Drinking Chocolate. Not to be confused with hot chocolate. They are extremely different things when made properly.

Drinking Chocolate is thick, silky, cream- lusciousness that’s meant to be sipped in small amounts.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cups milk (regular or a nut milk. I like use a can of full-fat coconut milk)
  • 5 ounces 70% dark chocolate chopped
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne (more or less, depending on preferred spice)
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1-2 Tbsp raw cane, coconut sugar or sweetener of choice (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

  • Add milk to a small saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Add dark chocolate and whisk to combine.
  • Add spices and whisk vigorously to combine.
  • Once chocolate is completely melted, remove from heat, and add vanilla extract. Whisk to combine. Taste and adjust flavors as needed, adding sugar or sweetener of choice if not sweet enough. Add more cayenne for kick.
  • Store leftover drinking chocolate in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a few days. Freeze for longer term storage, though best when fresh.
